EndYear
Dear reader,

The Star celebrated its 130th anniversary this year — an important milestone in an era of upheaval for both our industry and our democracy. But what's most remarkable is how relevant our founding principles remain to the core of our journalism.

The kinds of stories that draw in readers are the very ones that have always driven our journalism: Investigations and enterprise work in the public interest, coverage that holds governments to account, business stories that consider not just how well the economy serves the corporate class but how well it serves everyday people, journalism that helps readers interpret and navigate the world.

As bookends to our year, we provided the most authoritative coverage of the convoy protest and then the inquiry into the federal government's first-ever use of the Emergencies Act during the protest movement that shook Ottawa.

Our health team continues to offer indispensable coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and the crisis in Ontario hospitals. Our team was the go-to source as contract negotiations between Queen's Park and education workers fell apart.

We delivered a wide range of engaging deep dives and thorough investigations — ongoing exploration into the province's changing policies on greenbelt development, abuse allegations at a megachurch, medically assisted dying — and we've documented the changing economy and the housing crisis doggedly.

Our coverage of this year's elections — both provincial and municipal — used a combination of exclusives, explainers and digital tools to give voters the insights and information they needed to make informed choices on democracy.

Amid mounting distrust and misinformation, our journalists and our journalism remain a go-to destination for fair and trusted news and opinion.

This kind of journalism takes time, resources and commitment and it relies on the ongoing support of subscribers. We hope you consider supporting the Star and its journalism, and there's no time better than now, with our best offer of the year – 12 months for $12.

Sincerely,
Anne Marie Owens,

Editor in Chief, Toronto Star
