When discussing the finest directors of all time, a few names immediately pop to mind. John Ford. John Huston. Frank Capra. But adding in the condition that they must still be living adds a level of difficulty. Sure, you still have a few luminaries who are with us and clearly are contenders for the title - Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg. These guys are no slouches. But it starts to make the list a bit more challenging to compile, particularly when you consider the vast array of genres and styles in which these directors are working. Can John Lasseter's work in animation be directly compared to Sofia Coppola's atmospheric character studies? Can John Carpenter's '80s horror classics comfortably sit side-by-side with Wes Anderson's twee indie adventures? These are the kinds of tough calls Ranker listers are just going to have to make. One final element to consider would be consistency. Terrence Malick has made far fewer films than most of the entrants on this list, but most (if not all) have been of a remarkably high level of quality. Does that earn him a spot above, say, Clint Eastwood, who has worked a lot but with a somewhat more spotty record? Tough choices... but isn't that what ranking is all about? |

The list asks the question, "What is the best American novel?" with novels from William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth and Nathaniel Hawthorne, plus many more that have written great American novels since then. More modern American novels are included, such as The Road by Cormac McCarthy and The Stand by Stephen King, which may be more familiar. American novels can represent the spirit of the age in the United States during the time it was written or the time it was set in. You can make the case for many books to be on this list, but only a few can be considered the best novel ever written. For as long as books have been around, there has been debate amongst book enthusiasts over what truly is the best book ever. The one criteria on this list is that we are only taking fiction books into account. Anything should not be on here. Classics like Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Charles Dickens' Tale of Two Cities and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath are all on here and deservedly so as they've stood the test of the time and have become important pieces of literature. That's not to say that modern books are neglected, in fact, they're well represented as well. Recent classics like J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity Rainbow and Stephen King's The Waste Lands are on here. Being overrated doesn't mean it's not a good movie, or even a classic movie, it just means the movie's not living up to the hype surrounding it. Some of these overrated movies are Academy Award winners, some are the best comedies of all time, and some are even considered to be among the best movies ever by some, they are all overhyped and don't quite live up to all of the positive attention they've received. These are movies that film critics hailed as brilliant, movies your friends said you had to see, comedies you would fall over laughing at, and dramas so deep you'd never look at the world the same way again. Except that you did watch them, they did suck, and now you're questioning your friends's taste in everything. From Avatar and all the Twilights, to Love Actually (you monster) and Trainspotting (maybe? Up to you!), these are the films you hate, despite their popularity and/or acclaim. Although Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke star in one of the most popular shows of all time, most commoners know them as their character names Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, respectively. B-list actors thrive in supporting roles, yet these are the roles which fully highlight their unique talents and acting styles. Below includes a collection of all the celebrities who will soon be A-listers. By A-listers, it means actors and actresses at the height of fame, names and faces any bystander could instantly recognize. This list advocates for B-list actors who deserve the A-list treatment. The best professional players both past and present all have the chance to prove themselves and achieve a plaque in Cooperstown. But of all the players who do make it there, who are the very best? The members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are some of the greatest players of all time and some of the true legends of the game. The Hall of Fame opened in 1939 in Cooperstown, NY, the site of the first ever baseball game. Since then, many icons have been enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Lou Gehrig, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays and Bob Gibson are just a few of the numerous legends who have been inducted and with good reason: they're the among the greatest baseball players ever. In order to get inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, a finalist needs to receive at least 75 percent of the votes by the baseball writers. If they don't, they are eligible for up to 15 years, depending on if they receive the minimum amount of votes to stay on the ballot. If they don't make the Hall because of the writers, then the Veterans Committee can induct the players later on. This is the list of the greatest baseball players in the Hall of Fame. This list includes central characters from both the DC and Marvel Universe, as well as more non-traditional or underground comic books. The definition of what makes a "superhero" can be quite slippery, and often encompasses characters with questionable morals and behavior (giving rise to the notion of the "anti-hero.") If you love these superheroes, you'll also be interested to know that a few of them have really lame origin stories. Traditionally, a "superhero" simply means a larger-than-life character, or one gifted with special abilities, either organically or via their own genius or inventiveness, who uses his or her powers to protect and defend the public from threats. Though the word "superhero" began to be used as early as the 1910s, the concept really took hold in the public's mind following the introduction of Superman in 1938. Though Superman and other characters of his day were gifted with special talents and abilities, making them particularly suited to crusading for justice, many characters that followed were more "human" than the noble alien from Krypton, using their intelligence (such as Iron Man or Batman) to create a superheroic persona. A common trope has also become scientific accidents or twists of fate that turn a regular citizen into a superhero (as is the case with Spider-Man being bitten by a radioactive spider or Bruce Banner becoming The Hulk after being pelted with gamma rays.) Some superheroes also have disabilities that counteract their skills, weapons or unique talents. Of course, a number of superheroes are also not only not human, but god-like beings, such as Marvel's Thor. Because of the massive popularity of superheroes – particularly at the start of the 21st Century, when superhero films reigned at the box office – a number of deconstructions and analyses of the genre have also been done, culminating in the creation of "meta-superheroes" who comment on the concept of superheroism itself. The Watchmen, a group modeled on classic superhero comics but representing the ways that vigilantism and consolidated power can go wrong, is a good example of this trend. Each person on this list is considered, at least by some, to be abrasive and/or generally irritating. Not everyone's going to agree, of course, and that's why this is a VoteRanked list: You vote for the TV hosts that you find the most annoying, and vote down those you actually like. Also, if a particular host that annoys you isn't listed, feel free to add them.
